ABOUT

John Mathews is originally from Belfast, Northern Ireland and first moved to Canada in 2005 to complete an MFA at NSCAD University in Halifax,NS. He has worked as a co-director of Catalyst Arts (Ireland), as the programming coordinator at the Centre for Art Tapes (CFAT) in Halifax, NS and as a collections technician and curator at Cape Breton University Art Gallery in Sydney, NS. He has written for a number of art and photography publications that include CIRCA, Factotum, Visual Arts News, Source Magazine and Photo-eye.

 

His artwork explores a variety of themes that includes tourism, media culture, folk art and community activism. He has worked as an in house graphic designer for Opus Photography, CFAT and the Cape Breton University Art Gallery. He has also produced freelance graphic design work for a number of organisations that include Parks Canada, St.FX University, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia and Lumiere Arts Festival.
